Biography

Primitive Notion draws influences mainly from bands of the early and mid 90's from bands such as The Stone Roses, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, and Radiohead. However, several nuances of the 80's jangly guitars from The Smiths and the latin and jazz infused rhythms of bossa-nova can also be heard in their music.
The band first began with Brazil-born Mari Hutten (vocals, guitar) composing songs on her basement. After being part of several bands in and outside of Canada, she decided to form a band of her own. Hutten met Johnny Giancaspro (bass) at Dawson College in the Cinema, Video and Communications program. They had previously talked about forming a band but it only happened around January 2009 when they first began jamming and rehearsing. Johnny later brought a friend of his from Laval, Jesse Enright, to be the rhythm guitarist of the band. Initially a drummer, Johnny decided to switch to play the bass guitar while the band was struggling to find a bass player that could commit to the band. In the need of a drummer, Johnny asked his brother Evan to join the band. With this initial line-up the band began playing small and mid sized shows around the city of Montreal in venues such as Casa del Popolo and L'Escogriffe and with fellow Montreal bands such as Line Spectra. After months of having this line-up, Enright left the band due to other commitments outside of the band. The band is now recording its first official EP and looking to book shows in other cities around Canada.
