it's a metaphor to explain her noticing that she would hate to exist in every single period in history, even if she was in the highest position she could be (nowadays when she is the biggest artist)... i REALLY wish you guys would read a book idk

Racism in the 1830s (on the national level) included, but was not limited to: the The Indian Removal Act and The Trail of Tears; the deadly retaliation to Nat Turner’s Rebellion; the Black Hawk War, killing hundreds of Indians; the ascendance of minstrel show entertainers; the disenfranchisement of Mexican-Americans following wartime; the Seminole Wars; and the continuation of slavery. Although some advances were made (like the rise of the abolitionist movement), the decade has a major legacy of oppression.

Honestly I’ve had this conversation with my family and friends too on which decade we’d like to live in. I always say the 1920s-1940s due to how much I admire makeup, etc during that time. The 1800s were bad for Chinese-Americans and Mexican-Americans - and really everyone in general but to be frank the 1900s weren’t any better either lol.

This song is SO me coded but so many people interpreting the 1830s line wrong pains me. If you listen to the whole verse that line makes so much sense. Her and her friends play a game talking about the decade they wished they lived in and she brings reality into this conversation ('everyone would look down). by talking about the issues there were at that time, shes 'ruined' the game ('it wasn't fun now). The 1830s was a big era for writers and poets (Robert Browning, Charles Dickens, Edgar Allan Poe). She is doing the opposite of romanticizing this era. Because she has now 'ruined' this game she goes to 'secret gardens in her mind' ( The secret Garden being an iconic piece of literature). She also literally says that "Nostalgia is a mind trick", the 1800s is a highly romanticized era (with things like bridgerton) and people ignore what was happening in the world at the time, she is acknowledging what happened and says she would want to live there if the racism wasn't there.

Well, at least that verse warned us about the lack of reading comprehension skills in lots of adults

doesnt take much to look up the lyrics n realise the line has context n she was literally pointing out the fallacy of romanticing the past n how once u point it out the game "isnt fun now"

no one needs critical thinking skills to understand this, she’s really falling off on writing good lyrics so stop defending this 😭

I see that makes a little more sense of it, I still think even within the context it's just a silly lyric

Everyone understood what she tried to say, what people are criticizing is the dull songwriting. She could have said the same thing in much better and beautiful ways. All the people saying here that we who laughed at the pathetic lyric need to read a book or get better comprehension skills clearly are Colleen Hoover readers. Obviously you're going to think this is some writing masterpiece, I'm sorry (I'm actually not).
